The process
How it works
Time consuming and exacting, our paint process consists of a series of steps performed with masterful precision to match our highest quality standards.
Preparation
Preparation
Beneath every lustrous paint finish there is a meticulously prepared smooth foundation. For resprays, Titanium, Steel, and Aluminium frames we prepare the frame by carefully removing the old paint and smoothing out any material imperfections. On to the newly prepared surface we apply etch primer before applying the primer coat.
Colour base layer
Colour base layer
Once the primer is completely dry, we sand the tubes for a smooth surface and base layers of colour are then applied. This stage is where the foundation of your chosen colour or colours is laid down with precision and consistency.
Design
Design
In a complex and time-consuming process of masking and demasking we carefully work in the design details with painstaking precision. Every panel line, graphic, and colour transition is executed by hand — there are no shortcuts at this stage.
Clear coat
Clear coat
For protective brilliance that will shine through for years we apply multi-layers of clear-coat lacquer that is then gently baked for hardness and durability. This stage locks in the design and provides the long-lasting protection your frame deserves.
Finishing touches
Finishing touches
The finishing touches depend on the clear coat applied — whether matte or gloss. For gloss finishes we achieve our beautiful, lustrous, hard-wearing result by polishing to further enhance the deep shine. For matte finishes we rely purely on the well-honed skills of our painter to attain a consistent finish straight from the spray gun.
A different starting point
Bare carbon frame from factory
A bare carbon frame arriving straight from the factory requires a different preparation approach. The surface has never been painted and demands its own sequence of steps before any colour can be applied.
Surface inspection
Surface inspection
Every bare carbon frame is inspected carefully before any work begins. We check for surface voids, pinholes, resin-rich areas, and any imperfections left from the moulding process. Carbon fibre is unforgiving — any surface defect that isn't addressed at this stage will telegraph through the finished paint. We document what we find and discuss it with you before proceeding.
Surface preparation
Surface preparation
Unlike a respray, there is no old paint to strip. Instead, we lightly abrade the carbon surface to create mechanical adhesion for the primer. This must be done with great care — carbon fibre cannot be sanded aggressively without risking damage to the structural fibres beneath. We use fine-grit abrasives and work methodically across every tube and junction.
Void filling & fairing
Void filling & fairing
Pinholes and surface voids — common on factory carbon frames — are filled and faired at this stage. Each void is treated individually, allowed to cure fully, and then sanded flush. On frames with significant surface texture from the mould release, additional fairing compound may be applied across entire tube sections to achieve the smooth foundation that a show-quality finish demands.
Etch primer
Etch primer
With the surface prepared and faired, we apply an etch primer formulated for composite substrates. This primer bonds chemically to the carbon surface and provides the adhesion layer that all subsequent coats rely on. Getting this stage right is critical — a primer that isn't suited to carbon or isn't applied correctly will eventually fail, taking the paint with it.
Build primer & blocking
Build primer & blocking
One or more coats of high-build primer are then applied and allowed to cure. The frame is then blocked — sanded flat by hand — to reveal any remaining low spots or imperfections. This process may be repeated until the surface is perfectly flat and uniform. It is time-consuming, but it is what separates a paint job that looks good in photos from one that looks exceptional in person.
Colour, design & clear coat
Colour, design & clear coat
From this point the process follows the same sequence as a respray — colour base layers, masking and demasking for design details, and multi-layer clear coat baked for hardness and durability. The difference is that the foundation beneath is built specifically for carbon, giving the finished paint the best possible platform for long-term adhesion and appearance.
