Can My Frame Be Repaired?
Many carbon fibre bicycle frames can be professionally repaired, depending on the location and severity of the damage. Surface scratches, minor cracks, and impact damage to non-structural areas are often repairable to a structural standard that meets or exceeds the original specification. Damage near the bottom bracket, head tube, or major stress points requires careful assessment. At Brisbane Bicycle Service, we inspect every frame thoroughly before committing to a repair, and we will only proceed if we are confident in the outcome.
We regularly repair: surface scratches and paint damage that expose carbon fibres; minor cracks in non-critical areas; impact damage from crashes or drops; delamination (where layers of carbon separate); chainstay and seatstay damage; and tube-to-tube junction repairs. Damage that is generally not repairable includes catastrophic structural failure, damage to the bottom bracket shell that compromises thread integrity, and damage so extensive that the repair would add more weight than a replacement frame.
After any crash or impact, inspect your frame carefully before riding again. Look for: cracks or crazing in the paint (paint cracks often indicate underlying carbon damage); soft spots when you press firmly on the frame; unusual creaking or flexing under load; delamination — areas where the surface feels hollow or separated; and any visible deformation of the frame shape. If you find anything suspicious, stop riding the bike immediately and bring it in for assessment. Riding a damaged carbon frame is a serious safety risk.
Yes — a new creak after a crash is a warning sign that should be investigated before you ride again. Carbon can sustain internal damage that is invisible on the surface. A creak under load may indicate delamination or a crack that has not yet propagated to the surface. Bring the frame in for an assessment. We use ultrasonic testing to detect hidden damage that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

We will never return a bike we are not confident is safe to ride. Our process also includes a visual inspection under magnification and a load test before the repaired frame is returned.

Third, preparation: the damaged area is carefully removed and the surrounding carbon is prepared for repair. Fourth, the repair itself: new carbon fibre is laid up in the correct orientation and sequence, then cured under controlled conditions. Fifth, finishing: the repair is sanded, primed, and painted to match the original finish as closely as possible. Finally, a post-repair ultrasonic test confirms structural integrity before the frame is returned.
A quality carbon repair, properly finished and painted, is essentially invisible. Our repair process includes surface preparation, carbon layup, curing, and a professional paint finish that matches your frame's original colour as closely as possible. We do not return frames with visible repairs unless the customer specifically requests it. For frames with complex graphics or custom paint, we will discuss the finishing options with you before work begins.
Most standard repairs take 1–2 weeks from assessment to completion. More complex repairs — particularly those involving multiple areas or requiring custom paint matching — may take 2–4 weeks. We will give you a clear timeline at the assessment stage. We do not rush repairs: the curing process for carbon fibre cannot be accelerated without compromising the repair quality.

When done correctly, a professional carbon repair can restore a frame to its original structural specification — and in some cases, the repaired area may be stronger than the original. The key is correct carbon fibre orientation, appropriate resin systems, and proper curing. This is why we do not undertake repairs we are not confident in, and why we test every repair with ultrasonic equipment before returning the frame.
Yes — a professionally repaired carbon frame that has passed our post-repair testing is safe to ride. We would not return a frame to a customer if we had any doubt about its structural integrity. If we assess a frame and determine that a safe repair is not possible, we will tell you clearly and explain why. We will never recommend a repair that we are not confident in.
No — if you suspect your frame has been damaged, do not ride it until it has been assessed. Carbon can fail catastrophically and without warning. A crack that looks minor on the surface may indicate significant delamination beneath. The risk of riding a potentially damaged carbon frame is not worth taking. Cost & Insurance
Carbon repair costs vary significantly depending on the type and extent of damage. Minor surface repairs start from around $200–$300. More significant structural repairs typically range from $400–$800. Complex repairs involving multiple areas or custom paint can exceed $1,000. We provide a detailed quote after the initial assessment — no work begins without your approval. In most cases, professional repair is significantly more cost-effective than frame replacement.
Many home and contents policies, and some cycling-specific insurance products, cover accidental damage to bicycles including carbon repair. Check your policy. If you have cycling insurance, contact your insurer before authorising repair work — they may require an assessment or quote from a qualified repairer. We can provide the documentation insurers typically require, including a detailed damage assessment report and repair quote.
For a quality frame, repair is almost always better value than replacement. A $500 repair on a $4,000 frame gives you a structurally sound bike at a fraction of the replacement cost. The calculation changes if the frame is very old, has been repaired multiple times, or if the damage is so extensive that a full repair would be prohibitively expensive. We will give you an honest assessment of whether repair makes sense for your specific frame — including a frank opinion if we think replacement is the better option.
DIY & Common Mistakes
DIY carbon repair kits are available online, but we strongly advise against using them for structural repairs. Carbon repair requires specific knowledge of fibre orientation, resin systems, curing processes, and structural assessment. Getting any of these wrong produces a repair that looks fine but is structurally compromised. We have seen DIY repairs that appeared solid but failed under load. The consequences of a structural failure at speed are serious. Carbon repair is not a DIY project for structural damage.
After any crash, do not ride the bike again until it has been inspected. Carry out a visual inspection as soon as it is safe to do so — look for paint cracking, deformation, or soft spots. If you find anything suspicious, or if the crash involved a significant impact, bring the bike in for a professional assessment before riding again. Do not be tempted to ride home on a potentially damaged frame.
