Carbon Fibre Bike Repair: What Can Be Fixed?

Can carbon fibre bikes be repaired?
Yes — many carbon fibre bicycle frames, forks, and components can be professionally repaired to a structurally sound and safe standard. The key word is professionally. Carbon fibre repair is not a DIY job, and not every shop has the equipment or expertise to do it safely.
At Brisbane Bicycle Service, we use ultrasonic testing to assess every repair before and after — the same technology used in aerospace and structural engineering. This allows us to detect delamination and hidden damage that is completely invisible to the naked eye, and to confirm that every repair we carry out is structurally sound.
We will only carry out a repair we are confident in. If the damage is beyond safe repair, we will tell you honestly — and we will never return a bike we are not certain is safe to ride.

When repair is not possible
Some damage is beyond safe repair. We will always give you an honest assessment. Repairs we will not carry out include:
- Catastrophic frame failure or complete fracture
- Damage to the bottom bracket shell or head tube that compromises alignment
- Extensive delamination across a large structural area
- Damage where the repair would be heavier or weaker than a replacement

Warning signs your carbon bike needs repair
If you notice any of these, stop riding and have the bike assessed immediately.
Visible cracks or splits
Any visible crack in the carbon, no matter how small, should be assessed immediately. Do not ride the bike.
Paint bubbling or lifting
Paint that is bubbling, lifting, or separating from the surface can indicate delamination beneath — damage that is invisible until it fails.
Unusual creaking or flexing
A new creak or flex that was not there before, particularly under load, can indicate a structural issue in the frame.
Soft or spongy areas
Press gently along the frame. Any area that feels soft, spongy, or different from the surrounding material needs professional assessment.
Impact from a crash
Even a low-speed crash can cause internal damage that is not visible externally. If your bike has been in a crash, have it assessed before riding again.
Unusual handling
If your bike feels different to ride — less responsive, less stiff, or pulling to one side — stop riding and have it inspected.

Is it safe to ride a carbon bike after a crash?
No — not until it has been professionally assessed. Carbon fibre can sustain significant internal damage from a crash that is completely invisible externally. The frame may look fine but be structurally compromised. Always have the bike assessed before riding again after any impact.
How do I know if my carbon frame is delaminated?
Delamination is often invisible to the naked eye. Signs can include a dull sound when tapping the frame (compared to a clear ring on undamaged carbon), unusual flex, or paint bubbling. The only reliable way to detect delamination is with ultrasonic testing.
Will a repaired carbon frame be as strong as the original?
A professionally executed repair using the correct materials and techniques can restore a frame to close to its original strength. We use aerospace-grade carbon fibre and match the original layup schedule where possible. Every repair is tested after completion to confirm structural integrity.
Can you repair carbon wheels?
