Brisbane Bicycle Service — Bike Fitting Guide
What is Bike Fitting and Do I Need One?
A professional bike fit is one of the most impactful things you can do for your cycling — whether you're a weekend warrior or a competitive racer. Here's everything you need to know.
What is a professional bike fit?
A professional bike fit is a systematic process of adjusting your bike's contact points — saddle height and position, cleat alignment, and handlebar reach and drop — to match your body's proportions, flexibility, and riding goals.
Unlike a basic size guide or online calculator, a professional fit involves a trained fitter assessing your body in motion. At Brisbane Bicycle Service, we use computer-assisted motion capture and saddle pressure mapping to build a precise picture of how you interact with your bike.
The result is a riding position that is tailored specifically to you — not a generic size recommendation, but a precise configuration of your saddle, cleats, and handlebar that works with your body, not against it.
Why get a bike fit?
The benefits go well beyond comfort.
Prevent injury
The most common cycling injuries — knee pain, lower back pain, neck and shoulder tension, and numbness in the hands or feet — are almost always caused by a poor riding position. A professional fit addresses the root cause, not just the symptom.
Maximise power output
When your body is in the optimal position, you transfer more power to the pedals with less effort. Studies consistently show that a properly fitted rider produces more watts at the same perceived effort.
Improve comfort on long rides
Saddle discomfort, hot spots, and fatigue are not inevitable — they are signs of a fit problem. A proper fit makes long rides genuinely comfortable, not just tolerable.
Ride faster with less effort
Aerodynamic position, optimal reach, and correct cleat alignment all contribute to a faster, more efficient ride. A fit is one of the most cost-effective performance upgrades available.
Buy the right bike
Getting fitted before purchasing a new bike ensures you choose the correct frame size and geometry. This is especially important for custom or high-end bikes where returning or resizing is not an option.
Who should get a bike fit?
The short answer: almost every cyclist would benefit from a professional fit. But it is especially important if you:
- Ride more than 3–4 hours per week
- Experience any pain, discomfort, or numbness while riding
- Are buying a new bike — especially a custom or high-end frame
- Have recently changed your riding style, goals, or training volume
- Have had an injury that has affected your flexibility or strength
- Are preparing for a sportive, gran fondo, or competitive event
- Have never had a professional fit before
If you purchased your bike based on a size chart or a shop assistant's recommendation without a proper fit, there is a good chance your position could be improved — even if you are not currently experiencing discomfort.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to bring my own bike?
Yes — please bring your current bike and cycling kit (shoes, shorts, jersey) to every session. If you are buying a new bike through Brisbane Bicycle Service, a Static Fit is complimentary with your purchase.
What if I have an injury or physical limitation?
Please let us know when you book. Our fitters are experienced in working around injuries, asymmetries, and physical limitations. A fit can often help manage or reduce the impact of existing conditions.
How long do the results of a bike fit last?
A good fit should last several years, but significant changes in your body (weight, flexibility, injury, age) or riding goals may warrant a re-fit. We include follow-up sessions in our packages to fine-tune as your body adapts.
Is a bike fit worth it for a casual rider?
Yes — even casual riders benefit from a correct position. Comfort on shorter rides, reduced fatigue, and the prevention of overuse injuries are all valuable regardless of how much you ride.
